Road Trip!

I don't leave for vacation until Friday but I'm already on a mental vacation. I'm sure I'll be able to fake my way through the week but it's not gonna be pretty.

I'm going to be doing a lot of driving on this break (7 states in 10 days) so it has me thinking about road trip music. I checked out a stack of new CD's from the library and I'll be compiling all my favorite driving songs. So the question arises, what is the best road trip song of all time?

I'm partial to "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynard Skynard. It's really got nothing to do with driving but that guitar riff always brings a smile to my face. It's fun to sing along to as well.

So come all you guys that read my blog but don't comment (I know you're out there) name your favorite road trip song and maybe I'll be singing tunelessly along to it in my car in a week's time.

If you have a muscle car, "Rock you like a hurricane" by the scorpions is a tacky necessity.

Um, it's obviously "Running Down a Dream" by Tom Petty. GOSH!

I also think Sheryl Crow does pretty good road-trippin' music. I'm partial to "Steve McQueen" and "A Change Will Do You Good."

Ani DiFranco's "Out of Range." Totally. Actually, though, I think I could probably make a whole CD of Ani DiFranco road trip music. She must drive around a lot. Or at least sing about it.

"Gravel" is my favorite Ani song for driving.

Also, at the beginning of every road trip, I listen to the Pixies' "Debaser."

And as I drive through Indiana farmland on my way to and from Richmond every weekend, I enjoy "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" and all kinds of Lucinda Williams songs.

"Loom" is my favorite Ani song, and great for driving.

Also, "Universal Traveler" by AIR is a good travel song in an entirely different kind of way. Very mellow, very "it's 5 a.m., the sun's just risen, and no one's on the road except me and my coffee."

A classic - CCR, "down on the corner"

A newer one - Dave Carter with Tracy Grammer, "The River, Where She Sleeps" from the When I Go Album

Maggie: I'm totally going to listen to "Debaser" on this trip. I think it'll be perfect.

Trevor: "Rock You Like a Hurricane" has become my new personal theme song. Now all I need is a Camero.
